These runners are woven by Afghan tribes people from the Kundoz region of North Eastern Afghanistan. Whilst the knot count of such rugs is no more than medium the use of local wools for both the pile and the foundation ensure that these rugs are both hard wearing and durable.
The design features a typical ghul (sometimes referred to as elephant's footprint) design with many concentric borders. Colours are typically warm, deep reds with designs picked out in either black or extremely dark blue. This particular rug has the smaller ghul design with small amounts of off white along with a deep red.
This unusually long runner measures 19 feet long by 2 feet 8 inches wide. ( 5.80 x 0.80 metres ). It also weighs 15 kilos.
