Handwoven in the border areas of Afghanistan and Iran these beautiful pieces originate in the region known as Baluchistan. Whilst there are a number of different types and designs this particular selection represents one of the nicest batches we have had in many years.
This piece features a wonderful and interesting scenic design. In the foreground there is an oriental rug lying on the floor. In the background there is a place of worship with the actual prayer arch design clearly visible. The name or phrase 'Prayer Rug' is frequently, incorrectly applied to all sorts of small rugs. True prayer rugs are usually of this size, around 5' x 3' so that they are readily portable and must have a prayer arch depicted on them.
We recently bought a number of fine pieces with each piece being individually chosen from a much bigger selection thereby ensuring we have a good cross section of colours designs and types but at the same time we have been able to check the quality of each piece.
The pile is closely woven using fine local wools. Colours are typically warm rich and dark. Each rug has had some extra work put into it with either decorated edges (selvages) or fringes/ends (kelims), some have extra colours, patterns or just decoration. All in all a superb selection with each piece incredible value for money given the quality of the weaving and the extra embellishments.
It is worth looking at the extra pieces we have listed below before making your selection - or why not call in to our Norwich showrooms and be spoilt for choice!
This fine Prayer rug measures 4 feet 8 inches long by 2 feet 9 inches wide. (1.42 x 0.84 metres).
